DVR storage capacity is only limited by the amount of hard disk space you have available. If you are computer savvy you may want to consider buying a kit that includes everything you need to make your PC function as a DRV surveillance system. The software included with these kits gives you all the functionality you’ll need for your Home or Office Surveillance system. However before you decide to take this on yourself make sure the computer you’ve chosen for the task meets the minimum hardware requirements of the kit you selected. Minimum hardware requirements vary but for most of these kits the PC must at least a 2.8gz processor, 64mg Video card, 512k Ram and a 160g hard disk. If you have a few extra dollars my advice would be to spend it on additional memory and hard disk space (1g RAM – 200g or larger hard disk).

Now if you are not the type to buy a kit and install the hardware yourself, no problem, there are lots of good deals on preconfigured systems. I’ve seen complete (one channel) preconfigured entry level DVR systems consisting of all the basic components of DVR system, monitor and cameras with all necessary accessories such as connectors and cables, advertised as low as $599. These entry level systems retain all the powerful features of a high-end video surveillance system. If one channel isn’t enough for you step up to 4 channels and a complete turnkey system for under $800.

The most popular manufacturer is this market is GeoVision and although you can not buy there capture cards or preconfigured systems directly from the factory as a consumer the good news is there are lots of authorized resellers to choose from. Just b certain to pick a well established company with a good track record. Sometimes it is wise to pay a few extra dollars up front if it means you will have the support you need when you need it.
